JEWELLERY CARE
Fine jewellery is designed to last a lifetime, but proper care ensures it remains as beautiful as the day you received it. Here are some essential tips for keeping your AHW Atelier jewellery in pristine condition.
Daily Wear & Protection
- Avoid Chemicals – Remove your jewellery before using household cleaners, perfumes, lotions, or hand sanitisers, as these can damage metals and gemstones over time.
- Physical Activity – Take off your jewellery during exercise, swimming, or manual work to prevent accidental damage.
- Be Mindful of Impact – Precious metals and stones can still chip or scratch under force, especially rings worn daily.
Cleaning Your Jewellery
- General Cleaning – Use warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush to clean your jewellery at home. Avoid abrasive materials that could scratch the surface.
- Polishing & Professional Cleaning – Over time, gold and silver develop fine scratches. A professional polish can restore their shine. We recommend an annual professional clean and inspection to maintain your jewellery’s condition.
- White Gold & Rhodium Plating – White gold jewellery is naturally slightly yellow and is coated in rhodium to enhance its bright, silvery-white finish. This plating wears down over time and may need reapplication every few years to maintain its brilliance.
Storage & Care Between Wears
- Store Separately – Keep each piece of jewellery in its own pouch or box to prevent scratches.
- Keep Away from Moisture – Store in a dry place, avoiding prolonged exposure to humidity, which can cause tarnishing in silver.
- Chain Storage – Delicate chains should be stored unclasped and laid flat to prevent tangling.
Long-Term Maintenance
- Understanding Wear & Patina – Over time, fine jewellery naturally develops a patina. Gold may show fine scratches (which can be polished), while silver can tarnish but is easily restored with a silver polish cloth.
- Annual Check-ups – We encourage you to bring your AHW Atelier jewellery in for an annual check-up. Our experts can inspect settings, polish the piece, and ensure it stays in perfect condition for years to come.
Caring for Gemstones
- Diamonds & Sapphires – These are extremely durable but should still be protected from hard knocks to avoid chipping.
- Opals & Pearls – More delicate and porous, these stones should not be exposed to water, extreme temperatures, or harsh chemicals. Wipe them with a soft cloth after wear.
