Your engagement ring is a treasured symbol of love, and with proper care, it can remain beautiful for a lifetime. Here are essential tips on wearing, cleaning, and storing your ring.
Wearing Your Engagement Ring and Wedding Band
Daily wear is generally fine, but some activities can risk damage or loss. Consider removing your rings during:
Occupational Hazards: Manual labor, exposure to harsh chemicals, or environments where your ring could snag or be struck. This includes construction, mechanics, heavy machinery, professional sports, and some medical roles.
Outdoor and Dirty Activities: Gardening, hiking, or dusty sites can scratch metal, trap debris, and loosen stones.
Water Activities: Pools and seawater can erode metal and weaken prongs over time.
Exercise: Light exercise like running or yoga is fine, but impact or gripping sports (weightlifting, boxing, contact sports) can bend the band or loosen stones.
Chemicals & Cosmetics: Cleaning agents, bleach, hand sanitizers, lotions, and some beauty products can dull metals and stones, especially rhodium-plated white gold. Remove rings before cleaning, washing dishes, or applying heavy moisturizers.
Showering & Sleeping: Repeated contact with soaps and shampoos leaves residue on stones. Sleeping with rings may, in rare cases, bend prongs if caught on bedding.
When in doubt, remove your rings and store them safely.
Simple Home Cleaning
1. Soak to Loosen Dirt
Fill a bowl with warm water and mild liquid soap. Soak your ring for a few minutes to loosen residue under the stone and within the setting.
2. Gently Brush Away Residue
Use a soft toothbrush to clean the stone, setting underside, and band. Light strokes only — stop if the setting feels loose. In that case, let it soak longer or visit a jeweller.
3. Rinse and Dry
Rinse thoroughly under warm water. Air dry or gently buff with a lint-free cloth to restore shine.
Avoid harsh chemicals like bleach, ammonia, or abrasive cleaners that can damage metals or stones.
Safe Storage
When not wearing your rings:
-
Store them in a fabric-lined jewellery case, dedicated pouch, or the original box.
-
Keep diamonds or moissanite separate from softer gemstones like emeralds, rubies, or pearls to prevent scratches.
-
A consistent storage spot helps prevent loss and accidental damage.
Professional Checks
Even the most durable rings benefit from occasional expert inspection. Have a jeweller check your ring at least once a year to ensure prongs and settings are secure, stones are tight, and the metal remains in good condition.
By following these simple steps — careful wearing, gentle cleaning, safe storage, and periodic professional inspections — your engagement ring and wedding band will stay as radiant as the moment you received them.
