Understanding the 4 Cs

When buying a diamond, the 4 Cs — Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat — are the universal standard for evaluating quality and value. Knowing these helps you choose a stone that balances beauty, durability, and budget.

Cut

The cut determines how well a diamond reflects light, creating sparkle and brilliance. A well-cut diamond appears lively and radiant, while a poor cut can make even a high-quality stone look dull. Common cuts include round, oval, pear, marquise, cushion, and emerald.

Colour

Diamonds are graded on a scale from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown). Colourless diamonds are rare and highly valued, but near-colourless stones (G–J) offer excellent value without noticeable tint. Colour can also affect how the diamond complements its setting.

Clarity

Clarity measures how free a diamond is from inclusions (internal flaws) and blemishes (surface marks). Most inclusions are microscopic and don’t impact beauty. Common clarity grades include Flawless, Internally Flawless, Very Very Slightly Included (VVS), Very Slightly Included (VS), and Slightly Included (SI). Choosing the right clarity is about balancing perfection with price.

Carat

Carat refers to a diamond’s weight, not size, though the two are related. Larger diamonds cost more, but cut quality can make a smaller diamond appear bigger than a poorly cut larger stone. Carat choice is personal — it depends on desired impact and budget.

Lab-Grown Diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds are chemically, physically, and visually identical to mined diamonds. They offer several advantages:

  • Cost-effective – Typically 20–40% less expensive than mined diamonds of the same size and quality.

  • Ethical and sustainable – Produced without mining, reducing environmental impact and ethical concerns.

  • High quality – Lab-grown diamonds can achieve high colour and clarity grades more easily.

Many couples choose lab-grown diamonds as a modern, responsible, and beautiful alternative to natural diamonds without compromising sparkle or durability.

Choosing Your Diamond

When selecting a diamond, consider what matters most to you and your partner. Some prioritise sparkle and cut, while others focus on size or ethical sourcing. A well-balanced approach ensures you find a stone that is stunning, durable, and meaningful.
